More from the Minister of Spam

spamhuntress.jpgIf there's ever a sequel to Spam Kings (not that I'm planning one), Roy Giles is sure to be included.

As we mentioned here a couple weeks ago, Giles is a Texas preacher who's trying to raise money for his prison mission through spam solicitations.

Giles dropped by the blog on April Fool's Day to leave this little message: "Do you guys have a life outside of chasing me? Have you ever done anything FOR anyone besides yourselves? I sure none of you would be caught dead helping someone else."

Then Giles posted a warning to his colleagues over at the SpecialHam.com site. "Anti's that are monitoring this site" was the title of the posting. It went on to say that anti-spammers "have been trying to shut me down. They found me by monitoring my posts at this forum. They investigate us, we can investigate them also."

Then he posted a list of the "antis," including this blog, my personal email address, and a half dozen other names, sites, and email addresses. (Probably explains the sudden burst of blog spam that has hit here in recent days.)

Here's a really weird twist of fate. One of the antis in Giles' list, Norwegian spam huntress, Ann Elisabeth, runs a site that was hosted on the same server as RoyGiles.com! But it gets worse. As a result of Giles' spamming, the IP of the server that hosts her SpamHuntress.com site got added to the Spamhaus Blocklist.

Further irony: Ann Elisabeth apparently holds a degree in theology.

Anyway, looks like Giles spent his Sunday afternoon sending out a new blast of spam. According to the spam headers, Giles relayed the messages through a a hacked Comcast proxy.

But Giles' biggest problem seems to be his fellow junk emailers, not anti-spammers. Yesterday he posted a note at SpecialHam complaining that he got ripped off by a spam outfit called Promailing.com.

Roy, if you're out there, please explain why a good Christian thinks it's OK to engage in criminal spamming?

Argh, fresh blocks in Spamhaus today. Looks like someone just copied the data from the earlier blocks. NONE of his sites are currently hosted on my webhost's server, yet THAT IP address gets blacklisted! Someone needs to do his homework!

spamhuntress and i have been tracking this guy for a few weeks now (the info i've collected is at http://www.iknowwhatimdoing.com/archives/2005/03/on_the_case.shtml) ... so far, it seems extremely likely that mr. giles resides in texas, probably near garland. anyone interested in raising a stink can use the TX attorney general's online complaint form at http://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/complain.shtml. the atty gen's office also recommends reporting spam and fraudulent charities at ic3.gov, and at the better business bureau's "wise giving" site: http://www.give.org/inquire/complaint.asp.
