Spamming for the Lord

giles.jpgWhat's a minister doing in the SpecialHam.com spammer forum? You might hope he was proselytizing the spammers into giving up their evil ways. No such luck. Roy Giles was just looking for help with his spamware program and some proxies.

Last week, Giles posted a note at SpecialHam.com asking for "Dark Mailer headers that will work on Hotmail and Yahoo." A few days later, he was back, seeking "SOCKS proxies at low cost."

Seems Giles, who runs a Texas outfit called Roy Giles Outreach Ministries, has been soliciting donations to his organization via spam. The messages say Giles is trying to raise money to purchase books for a Christian Parenting class he will be teaching this May at an unnamed Texas state prison.

While Giles may be having problems sneaking his messages past spam filters at Hotmail and Yahoo, he's managed to get them onto a discussion list operated by the Internet Engineering Task Force, as well as on a list for Indonesia marketers.

Giles even broadcast his message (which began "I know that you and the members in your church, care for lost souls and know how to pray for needs") to someone who frequents a message board for aetheists.

Giles is no newbie spammer. He was spamming newsgroups in 1997 for RG Communications, Inc., his telecomm data and billing service. And his wife, Angie, has dabbled in spam as well.

Giles apparently was hoping someone would give him the Dark-Mailer information he needed for cheap. His note at SpecialHam said, "I am poor, not rich like all of you. I run a non-profit org." But according to a national database of nonprofit organizations, Roy Giles Outreach Ministries is not registered with the IRS as a non-profit.

Why isn't this guy in jail? We know he's spamming, and it's not like he's a hard guy to find. Not only that, he's using hacked computers. Off with his head.

Is it possible to use proxies legally?

The CAN-SPAM Act regulates all “commercial e-mail messages”, so it does not apply to a Nonprofit org?

Posted by: budz at March 26, 2005 9:57 AM

budz,

"But according to a national database of nonprofit organizations, Roy Giles Outreach Ministries is not registered with the IRS as a non-profit."

Either way, Giles was clearly looking for someone with an illegal botnet (trojaned zombie computers) to sell him access to proxies.

Do you guys have a life outside of chasing me?

Have you ever done anything FOR anyone besides
yourselves? I sure none of you would be
caught dead helping someone else.

May God bless you anyway,
Roy Giles

I just got one of Roy Giles' spams this morning.
I checked for "Roy Giles" at Guidestar.org,
which lists nonprofit (501(c)(3) tax exempt)
organizations, and Roy Giles Outreach
Ministries does not seem to be listed.
Maybe the IRS should be acquainted with his
Web site. (Meanwhile, I sent a spam complaint
to the E-mail service provider and the hosting
provider, which is in China.)

See Brian's comment above. Since Roy Giles
seems to browse this forum, I am not listing
my E-mail or URL as I don't want to be joe-
jobbed (revenge spammed) although, if Mr.
Giles were to do this, he will genuinely
need the Lord's mercy because I (and my
attorneys) will have none.

Roy, if you are legit - why are you not registered as a non-profit? Nance

Posted by: nance at April 17, 2005 11:45 AM

I am personally disgusted at Roy Giles. I want to ask everyone to complain to Paypal in addition to his server host. This may be the most effective way to slow this ruthless con man down. Paypal is more sensitive to fraud than chinese servers are to spam. Also contact the Texas AG's office and complain. Spam is bad. Con's are bad. Cons using God as bait and spam as the tool are the worst imaginable and must be stopped!!

Posted by: RR at April 26, 2005 1:50 AM

Just received a spam from Mr. Giles this morning in my hotmail account. His Outreach Ministries website has been suspended. No, Mr. Giles, you are not getting my $5 in foreign or domestic currency.

He lists a valid Garland, TX address in his email. Wonder if anyone knows if this is his home or business?

Just got Roy Giles spam today. It's just sad because there are so many people who truly have a heart for the incarcerated. I was actually trying to get to his website and came upon this instead. If he really is a con, God will make sure he gets what he deserves. God will not be mocked and you will reap what you sow.

I CAN'T BELEIVE WHAT I AM READING...I just got an e-mail from MR. Giles and I offered to help him out by sending him books that would be good for inmates who are parents and I even forwarded his info to another ministry who does the same work UUUGGGHHHH!!!!! Oh well, at least I didn't send any money AND I need to contact my people to make sure he doesn't swindle them!

I Googled his name after I repleid to his e-mail and all of this negative stuff popped up! I am so disappointed - yet happy I didn't send money AND for the person who made this blog!!!

The following is what i received from this fraud. "Roy Giles Outreach Ministries", ya right. How about..."Roy Giles spam Ministries" or "On his way to Hell Ministries" I'm sure the Lord has a place prepared for you Roy!

Hello,

Over 2 years ago, the Lord asked me to start a prison and homeless
ministry. Over that time, I have seen the Lord save countless souls
and heal many more. I am truly reaching them by faith since funding
is so scarce. Please join me in reaching them by helping to provide
the materials I need to disciple them for Jesus. I also need your
help with auto expenses to get to the prisons and where the homeless
are.

For more information, please reply to this email. My website is my
name plus .com

If the website or email fails to work, please try again later.

My budget for May is 370 dollars short. Please consider helping
me purchase discipleship material and gas to get to the prisons
and to the homeless.

Please pray for this ministry, satan is constantly tring to stop
me from sharing Jesus to every creature.

I can also take foreign currencies.

Thank you and May God bless you,

Roy Giles Outreach Ministries

Roy, who ever you are, remember to give Ceaser, what is his and God what is His too. Sometimes, life might be hard for you however, don't and never take the name of the Lord in vain. God is never mocked. You'll reap what you sow! Let everyone using the Name of the Lord be careful, for the wrath of God cometh upon the children of disobedience. God is not desperate to save souls, using carnal methods. He has and is raising ministers for this end time harvest, who will do everything legit and openly, that no one will have any cause or reason to accuse the work of God, unless they are antichrist, of course!

Roy, REPENT and let Jesus take care of the burden. Make him your personal saviour and be born again. Let Jesus reign in your life and have a truthful heart for him.

NEVER TAKE SPIRITUAL SHORTCUTS - THEY LEAD TO SIN... for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God, is life in Christ Jesus.

MJS posted on May 5 that his roygiles.com website had been suspended. It seems to be up and running again at the moment....

Posted by: Budgie at May 25, 2005 12:31 AM

seriously, who sends money to people asking for it by email? Especially when you look at the guys website, its nothing but an address to send him money.

Posted by: hello at May 25, 2005 6:49 PM

There is another way to make $370.00 - WORK, not electronically panhandle.

English speakers are always in demand at McDonalds.

Posted by: xyz at July 18, 2005 9:56 PM

I sent the guy about $80. I'm a little disappointed. His cause seemed like a good one.
The picture of him with his family really sucks you in. He looks like a pastor at a small church and honest as the day is long.

Posted by: Michael Esker at August 1, 2005 3:35 PM

This guy does not know what a real job is... he has been hacking for years. Just remember Roy - what goes around comes aroung....

Posted by: one of his scammers at August 23, 2005 9:08 PM

i hope roy goes to jail and has 'jesus' [pronounced hey-seus] buttfuck him until he's crapping blood!

Posted by: mroblivious at October 8, 2005 11:29 PM
